Endometriosis is an uncomfortable and painful condition affecting up to 10% of women. Know that you are not alone. Turn to the skilled medical team at East Cooper OB/GYN to diagnose and treat endometriosis so you can live a more comfortable and full life.
Endometrium is the tissue that lines the uterus. When this tissue grows outside of the uterus it is called endometriosis. The areas where endometrial tissue typically form include the ovaries, bowel, and the tissues lining the pelvis. It is possible for tissue to grow beyond the pelvic area but that is very uncommon.
Hormonal changes take place during a menstrual period, causing the lining of the uterus to grow, thicken, and break down. Endometrial tissue that grows outside of the uterus performs the same way, but it becomes trapped in the pelvis because it has no place to go. As a result, the areas become inflamed and causes cysts, scar tissue, and adhesions to develop. These symptoms range from mild to severe and include:
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
- Bleeding between Periods
- Painful Periods
- Painful Intercourse
- Uncomfortable Bowel Movements
- Lower Back Pain
Although there is no cure for endometriosis, there are treatments available to alleviate the discomfort and make symptoms more manageable.
