What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous lumps that grow on your uterus. You do not need to treat them unless they are causing you problems. If you are experiencing symptoms, they may include:

  • Discomfort or Swelling in the Lower Abdomen
  • Leg Pain
  • Pain During Sexual Intercourse

Although it is unknown what exactly causes fibroids, the female hormones estrogen and progesterone appear to increase their growth. During your reproductive years, your body produces the highest levels of these hormones. During menopause, your body makes less of these hormones and symptoms are subsequently reduced.

Medications for Fibroids

Different medications for fibroids target the specific hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle, helping to treat painful symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding. Although medications don’t eliminate fibroids, they may help to shrink them.

Medications for fibroids include:

  • Gn-RH agonists, such as Synarel and Lupron, treat fibroids by inhibiting the production of estrogen and progesterone. Gn-RH agonists cause menstruation to stop, putting you into a temporary postmenopausal state and shrinking fibroids. A Gn-RH agonist may be used to shrink your fibroids before a planned surgery.
  • A progestin-releasing IUD can reduce the heavy bleeding that accompanies fibroids by releasing a small amount of hormone into the uterine cavity. Although an IUD provides symptom relief, it does not shrink fibroids or cause them to disappear.
  • Women with fibroids are frequently prescribed contraceptive pills or hormonal medications to try to minimize bleeding while regulating the menstrual cycle. We may also recommend that you take vitamins with iron if you have heavy menstrual bleeding and/or anemia.
