Understanding Menstrual Disorders

The menstrual cycle is a natural part of being a woman, but it is important to recognize that every woman is different. What may be considered “normal” for one woman may not be for another. With that in mind, we encourage you to remain in tune with your own body so you can recognize when something is wrong. Menstrual disorders are characterized as abnormal, uncomfortable, and/or debilitating. Common causes for menstrual disorders include:

  • Genetics
  • Fibroids
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Clotting Disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Cancer
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
  • Cysts on the Ovaries
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

This is marked by physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms that occur before the first day of your menstrual cycle. There are a host of symptoms associated with PMS including:

  • Mood Swings
  • Headache
  • Acne
  • Bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

This is a severe form of PMS with heightened symptoms that are incapacitating. Additionally, anger, anxiety, tension, and irritability are especially prominent in PMDD.

Menorrhagia

This is also referred to as heavy menstrual bleeding. In general, bleeding during a period lasts for 5 to 7 days. While all women vary in the amount of blood released, heavy bleeding requires tampons or pads to be changed once an hour or more frequently. When bleeding interferes with your daily life and inhibits you from performing normal activities, this is considered heavy menstrual bleeding.

Amenorrhea

This condition is when a menstrual period does not occur for more than 3 consecutive cycles. Primary amenorrhea is when menstruation does not commence at puberty. Secondary amenorrhea is when periods become irregular or absent later in life and can be due to excessive exercise, eating disorders, ovulation abnormalities, or a thyroid disorder.

Dysmenorrhea

It is common for women to experience cramping before or during their menstrual period; however, when cramps are so severe that they are debilitating, this is called dysmenorrhea. Diarrhea may also occur as a result of this condition.
