MUSCLE STRAINS
Muscle strains aren’t just uncomfortable, but may require professional treatment when they occur in order to ensure proper healing and to avoid future injuries. Our orhtopedic practices can provide you with effective treatment to help you quickly and effectively heal from a muscle strain.
A muscle strain occurs when the muscle is stretched beyond its normal range of motion or there is more load placed on the muscle
than it is able to handle, causing the muscle fibers to tear. They frequently occur near the point where the muscle joins the fibrous, connective tissue of the tendon. Muscle strains are graded from first degree, which is mild, to third degree, which
is severe, based on how much muscle fiber was torn. The most common causes of muscle strains include:
- Playing sports
- Pushing or pulling something heavy
- Exercising
- Falling
A strained muscle will cause an immediate, often sharp pain at the point of the injury, sometimes accompanied by a popping or snapping sensation as the muscle tears. If you experience a strained muscle, you should immediately cease activity and apply
ice to the injured area. Swelling, bruising, and cramping will likely occur after straining a muscle, and it may be difficult or impossible to move the limb.
A muscle that has been strained is at an increased risk for re-injury, so it is important to rest, apply ice, and use an anti-inflammatory medication for swelling, then seek a medical examination. Our orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants will assess your muscle strain to determine whether additional treatment such as physical therapy or surgery will be necessary.
