SHOULDER TENDONITIS AND BURSITIS
Shoulder impingement affects individuals who participate in sports or hobbies involving repetitive motions. Our orthopedic doctors can provide treatment for shoulder bursitis and tendonitis in Mount Pleasant and Goose Creek, South Carolina so that you can keep doing the activities you enjoy!
Two conditions associated with shoulder impingement are bursitis and tendonitis. Both of these conditions can happen when the tendons in the shoulder’s
rotator cuff become irritated and inflamed from contact with the bones of the shoulder.
Shoulder Bursitis: Inside of the shoulders are tiny, fluid-filled sacs called bursa that help reduce friction between the bones in the joints. Bursitis occurs when these sacs become inflamed from injury, overuse, or medical conditions that cause
joint inflammation. Individuals who are more prone to bursitis include carpenters, musicians, athletes, and gardeners. Symptoms may include discomfort when lying on the shoulder, pain on the outside or top of the shoulder, pain that worsens when the
arm is lifted to the side, pain when pushing on or opening a door, pain when “circling” the arm, and pressure or pain when pushing on the top of the shoulder.
Shoulder Tendonitis: Shoulder tendonitis is an inflammation of the rotator cuff or biceps tendon. It can be caused by a tendon getting pinched by nearby structures, and often occurs in sports that require the arm to move overhead repeatedly, such
as baseball, weightlifting, volleyball, racket sports, and certain swimming strokes. Symptoms may include pain and swelling in the front of the shoulder or the side of the arm, pain triggered by raising or lowering the arm, an inability to hold the
arm in certain positions, a clicking sound when raising the arm, stiffness, pain that disturbs sleep, pain when reaching behind the back, or a loss of mobility and strength in the affected arm.
It is important to seek medical treatment for shoulder impingement as soon as possible so that the condition does not worsen. Our sports medicine specialists will examine the injury and determine its extent to create a plan for treatment that may include rest and pain management, corticosteroid injections, or surgery.
