TORN LIGAMENTS

A torn ligament is the most severe injury that can happen to a ligament, and not only is it painful, but it can be frustrating for those who are trying to continue with their active lifestyles. Our orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants can provide diagnosis and treatment of your torn ligament so that you can get back to doing the things you love.

Ligaments connect bones throughout the body and limit joint movement. While flexible, they can tear as the result of a fall or injury. Ligament injuries are frequent in high-intensity sports that involve running and pivoting, and commonly occur in the knees and ankles, but can occur in any joint in the body including the wrist, thumb, shoulder, neck, and back.

Symptoms of a ligament injury will vary depending on its severity, but may include a loud pop or snapping at the time of injury, swelling to the area of injury, looseness of the joint, inability to move or put weight on the joint without pain, and spasms in the muscles surrounding the injury. These injuries can be as painful as a fracture, and prompt medical attention is important when one occurs.

Mild ligament injuries can be treated with rest, ice, compression, elevation, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. A brace or splint may also be recommended for comfort and protection of the injury, along with physical therapy to help strengthen the ligament. More severe strains and tears to a ligament may require surgical treatment to repair or replace the ligament. Physical therapy is typically recommended following a surgical ligament repair or replacement.
