If you suffer a laceration, it is important to seek medical care as soon as possible. The physicians at our practice can provide you with treatment for more superficial lacerations, though we may refer you to a specialist if the wound impacts a cosmetically sensitive area such as your face or hands, or if it is very deep. Seeking medical assistance to treat your laceration is important for both avoiding infection and reducing, or even eliminating, scarring from the wound. While some cuts can be treated at home with antibiotic ointment and a sterile bandage, there are wounds that should be treated by a medical professional. These include lacerations that are:

  • Deep or showing muscle, fat, or bone
  • Filled with dirt or debris
  • Bleeding after 15 minutes of applied pressure
  • Jagged with uneven edges
  • Located at or near a joint, or on your hand or foot
  • At risk of leaving a severe scar

Patients who have diabetes or poor blood pressure should also seek medical care to treat a laceration, because these conditions can impede healing or increase the risk of infection.

Antibiotics or a tetanus shot may also be prescribed as part of treatment for a laceration, and the patient should monitor for signs of infection such as redness, inflammation, drainage of fluid or pus, red streaks on the skin, or chills and fever. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you are experiencing symptoms of an infection, as you may require additional medical care.
